How to Get Google Reviews and Why You Need Them

Reviews have become an essential part of the consumer process. From trying a new restaurant to staying at a hotel to choosing new patio furniture, most of us read online reviews before making a decision. In fact, studies show that over 90% of consumers read reviews before purchasing from a business.

But it’s even more important for those working more intimately with parents. As a new mother or father, trusting anyone in those early stages is challenging. That’s why having more reviews (or testimonials) from others you’ve helped can go a long way.

Here we discuss how to get Google reviews and why they are important to your small business.

Asking Parents to Write Reviews

We know–sometimes soliciting reviews can feel a little awkward. But, it must be done. Make it easy on yourself and start with families you’ve grown especially close with. Remember, it’s about making it as easy as possible. Most busy families don’t have a lot of time to spare so asking them to take even a few minutes to write a meaningful review can feel like a big ask. That’s why you should make it easy on them. Send an email or text with a link to your Google My Business page.

Sometimes it helps to offer to write it yourself. This may seem odd, but it can speed up the process and ensure you touch on the specifics you most want.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Twice

Did you ask for a review and don’t see it? Ask again. This is your business, and earning new clients makes reviews that much more important. Additionally, having consistent reviews helps your SEO and looks good for parents vetting you.

With that said, don’t follow up too soon. Wait a few weeks and ask again.

Best Practices

Responding to reviews is a delicate process. Make sure to follow these crucial do’s and dont’s.

Do

  • Respond to every review- It’s important to make a meaningful response no matter the review. If it’s a lovely review, simply replying, “I’m so happy I could help your family,” goes a long way for the reviewer and people looking at your reviews.

  • Promote positivity- Even if a review starts off negative try to end it on a positive. Ask the reviewer to have a private conversation so you can better help them, for example.

  • Hold yourself accountable- It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s likely you’ll encounter unsatisfied families at some point. But hold yourself accountable. Admit when you’ve made a misstep. It’s better for potential clients to see that you own your mistakes and vow to do better.

Don’t

  • Argue- This is one of the worst things you can do. Instead, apologize. Arguing will get you nowhere with former clients and future ones. In fact, it may show that you are combative. Not something families would want to bring into their dynamic.

  • Ignore reviews- Every review should have a response–good or bad.

  • Be apathetic- Empathy will go a long way. Show it by relating to reviewers. If they have negative things to say about their experience–remember, that they are desperate parents looking for help. You’re likely dealing with a sleep-deprived mamma so give her some grace and be empathetic. It’s likely not personal.

  • Have a standard response- Every response should be carefully crafted and authentic. Don’t do a copy/paste situation. That isn’t a good look and shows that you’re just going through the motions rather than responding thoughtfully.

Why You Should Ask for Reviews

There are many benefits to soliciting reviews, including:

  • Giving clients value- By asking your family for reviews you’re showing them that you value their input and feedback. This is why following up/responding is even more important.

  • Transparency- Asking for reviews is a great way to promote transparency with the families you work with and to show other families that you’re trustworthy.

  • Prevents negative feedback- Getting a negative review never feels good but you can view it as a learning opportunity to do better. You may also be able to win families over by responding thoughtfully, apologetically, and empathetically.

  • Provides collateral- If a family is on the fence and unsure about working with you, you can forward them to your reviews. Let them decide. Reviews can also make great testimonials for social media or your website.

Bottom line: Google reviews are a great way to earn and retain clients. Moreover, they help boost your SEO, can provide testimonials, and give you a way to further connect with the families you serve. And… it’s absolutely free.
